NOAA's Paul Kocin Is Coming To Kean University



The Student Chapter of the AMS/NWA at Kean University (the Meteorology Club) will host visiting scientist, Paul Kocin on Thursday February 19th at 7:00 p.m. on the Kean University Campus in Center for Academic Success(CAS) Room: 106.

Mr. Kocin will present his research of winter weather as well as discuss a few notable winter weather events. Mr. Kocin and co-author Dr. Louis Uccellini, director of the National Center for Environmental Protection (NCEP) released Northeast Snowstorms- Volume 1- Overview as well as Volume 2- The Cases a comprehensive book set on winter weather in the Northeastern United States. The two meteorologists also co-developed the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale (NESIS) to classify snowstorm intensity on a scale of 1-to-5.

Mr. Kocin was also the face of the Storm Update segment on The Weather Channel as the winter weather expert. Prior to his time at The Weather Channel Mr. Kocin served as a meteorologist in National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Hydrometeorological Prediction Center and was a research meteorologist in the Laboratory for Atmospheres at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Mr. Kocin has been featured in various programs to analyze winter weather events including World News Tonight, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic. Mr. Kocin graduated from Cornell University with B.S. in Atmospheric Science, and earned his M.S. in Meteorology from Penn State University. Mr. Kocin is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and is once again working at NOAA's NCEP/HPC.

The Student Chapter of the AMS/NWA at Kean University prides itself as a community leader in networking, outreach, and operations through research and Keancast campus weather forecasting (http://hurri.kean.edu). The chapter also participates in community service projects both on and off campus.

Prior to Paul Kocin's presentation on Thursday February 19th at 7:00 p.m. the chapter requests each guest to bring one item of non-perishable food as part of the chapter's donation to the local community food bank in Union, New Jersey.
